The importance of self-care

Self-care is the practice of actively looking after your mental health and well-being. Although the term is frequently used, many people still struggle with the concept, and some people even worry it is being selfish. In our current climate, where we have what can feel like diminishing control over our lives, it is more important than ever. For many of us, some of our normal self-care cannot take place due to COVID-19. Gyms are shut, we can’t meet up with family or friends, date nights are out but there are lots of positive things we can do to look after ourselves. Here are just a  few examples;

  • Enjoy a relaxing bath
  • Call a friend
  • Read a good book
  • Relax with your favourite hobby
  • Give yourself a hand massage with carrier oil and essential oils or hand cream (if you live with someone else, take turns to massage each other’s hands, feet or shoulders)
  • Don’t take on too many tasks or responsibilities (it’s OK to say no sometimes)
  • Go for a walk, run or do other exercise
  • Meditate
  • Cook a nice meal
  • Enjoy some nature
  • Stroke and play with your pets
  • Create a bedtime ritual that is kind to yourself and then have an early night

Most of all schedule time for self-care and don’t feel guilty!
